Warm on the inside

Twenty plus inches of snow fell in Brooklyn this past weekend. The girls had fun both playing outside in the snow and watching the snow fall from inside. This window as a good spot to watch the snow mounds grow and grow over everything. The woodpiles and the gas grill simply became white humps. The tree branches, in the words of the kids, had great white snakes covering them completely.

One afternoon in Queens

Walking home from a friend's house, I passed by this driveway with an interesting mix of geometry and light. Keeping this blog is hopefully making me more observant of photo opportunities like this to record and share.

View of Williamsburg Bank building

A while back I came across an exhibition of paitings at the Brooklyn Public Library. The paintings were landscapes from around Brooklyn, but the common theme was that each painting had some view of the Williamsburg Bank building, either as a primary or secondary (in some cases very secondary) element. I thought it might make an interesting ongoing photo project, so I have begun to collect images of the Bank myself. The image below is probably not the first I've taken, but it's the first that I am posting. Can you find the bank tower in this image?

More from the Gowanus Canal

I came across this lonely and curiously placed traffic cone while doing some further exploring of the Gowanus Canal. The photo was taken from the Carroll Street bridge, a wonderfully old bridge of the 'retractile' type, built in 1888. Basically, when the bridge needs to open, say, once every three or four months, maybe, it just slides out of the way on rails.

A photo of the plaque that adorns the bridge operators building.

Getting wired

Don't look for this in Brooklyn, although you might find something similar. I took this photo on a recent trip to Cancun, Mexico. The area was heavily damaged by Hurricane Wilma in October of '05. While out looking for photos, I came across a baseball field that was being used as a staging area for electrical equipment. The field had thousands of glass insulators and huge coils of wire. The afternoon light brought the glass to life. You can see more of these photos on my PBase site.
