Puerto Morelos, Mexico

I don't do a lot of color travel\scenic photography, but sometimes certain scenes are hard to pass up. I shot this while walking along the beach in Puerto Morelos, Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula, near Cancun). I was looking for street portraits (I'll post some of those later), but I saw and liked the dramatic cloud over the water. The bird and boat help to give a bit of interest and perspective to the photo.

Stranger in the Park

I took this photo a few days after the big February snowstorm. This gentleman was taking in some late afternoon sun in Bryant Park, behind the New York Public Library. His face glowed in the warm sun and stood out strikingly from the background shadows. I asked him if I could take his photo and he agreed. I took a few closer up, but I liked this composition of him sitting amidst the snow and chairs.
Here's the other photo, closer up. It definitely shows more of the character of the face, but less of the environment. Such are the tradeoffs in composition.

Flags on Fifth Avenue

In the image above, I like the compositional possibilities of these three flags, waving in a light afternoon breeze. With no control over the wind, this is the situation where you need to take a number of shots and then see if anything interesting comes out of it. This is much easier thanks to digital; I don't think I would have tried this with film.
In the image below, I liked the shape and contrast of the man's coat against the bright sidewalk and the backlighted flags.

Urban reflections

I took this photo on the corner of 43rd St and Madison Avenue. There was a big puddle at the corner that people were stepping around. The reflections of buildings, the lamppost, and the pedestrians made for some interesting compositions. I stood on the corner for about 15 minutes waiting for the right one to happen. I won't call it the 'decisive moment' (see Cartier-Bresson), but its a moment that worked better than the others.
